Zoe Quinn

Zoe Quinn's interactive story game Depression Quest is a raw and unapologetic look into living with depression.

As someone who is diagnosed with major depression disorder and on anti-depressiants, I recognized and sympathized with a lot of the emotions and struggles in this game.

Quinn highlights some of the less visible symptoms of depression: lack of motivation, self isolation, emotional detachment, and apathy. You go through the game, limited by these traits.

I was particularly taken back by the #gamergate movement this game stirred up. An ex-boyfriend of Quinn's falsely accused them of sleeping with a journalist, resulting in their game's growing popularity. As if Zoe didn't simply create a game about a common illness, allowing players to control their coping methods and deal with real life issues while also providing outreach numbers. I have no doubt in my mind that Zoe's hard work conntected with those struggling with depression, and their popularity grew as a result.

The idea that their work is only merited by sleeping with a man is laughable and the result of a group of gamers fighting against inevitable progression and inclusion. The trauma that resulted was horrific, but Zoe managed to fight through it, creating an outreach service called Crash Override for victims of online harrassment.
